A method to calculate the readability of a text is offered in the manual "Effective Writing", produced by Arthur Andersen and Co., Illinois, USA.

Text Fog Index =
average words per sentence + percent of long words X 4

GRADE SCALE


- 6 to 9 = easy

- 10 to 12 = safe reading

- 13 to 17 = difficult
    INDEX EXAMPLES:

  • Hemingway = 8 - 10
  • Faulkner = 12
  • New York Times = 11
  • Chicago Tribune = 10
  • Edgar Allan Poe = 12
  • Newsweek = 11
  • Time = 10
